The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is a key component of Northeastern University's ongoing effort to expand its capacity to engage in path breaking research focused on finding solutions to the global challenges in the areas of health, sustainability, and security. This 220,000 square foot building is helping transform Northeastern's research enterprise by providing state-of-the-art infrastructure, fostering collaboration across disciplines, and increasing the university's capacity to hire top faculty and academic leaders. The six-story, LEED-designed facility features cutting-edge scientific equipment and lab space for up to 100 principal investigators and their research teams from Northeastern's College of Science, Bouve College of Health Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Computer and Information Science, and other colleges. ISEC also houses classrooms, teaching laboratories, faculty offices, and a cafe. Northeastern University seeks a professional to work with the Provost, Vice Provosts, and Deans to ensure the successful operation of ISEC and to achieve ISEC's strategic priorities, including facilitating the research community's transition from closed/individual/cellular laboratories to the open/shared/flexible research facilities of ISEC. The position's responsibilities include recommending appropriate research principal investigator adjacencies, purchasing and deploying shared equipment effectively, and overseeing the fit-out of spaces. The day-to-day responsibilities include coordinating the delivery of high quality, effective services in support of ISEC's mission and occupants. The Operations Director will help develop and maintain processes and procedures to provide logistical support for laboratory and classroom activities, administer core equipment, and help ensure all equipment is properly maintained, regularly serviced, and energy efficient. This position is vital to keeping the people and activities in ISEC safe and secure. The Operations Director will serve as the principal liaison to the Environmental Health & Safety division to help the colleges ensure that the laboratory and core facilities meet all safety and regulatory standards and that all personnel seeking access to laboratory and equipment are properly trained. The Director is also the primary liaison to the Facilities division for the building, helping ensure the continued functioning of the building's systems and structures.
A PhD, preferably in science or engineering, is required along with five years of experience in an academic research laboratory setting. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with diplomacy and the inclination to build strong relationships by walking around the facility. Preference will be given to those with a deep understanding of research infrastructure, equipment, operations, and safety, experience in guiding interdisciplinary instrumentation, and a passion for being part of a research endeavor that will directly impact society.
