Berkeley Lab's Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a EcoPods Development Postdoctoral Scholar. The Biosciences Area of LBNL forges multidisciplinary teams to solve national challenges in energy, environment, and health issues, as well as advance the engineering of biological systems for sustainable manufacturing. As part of the Biosciences Research Division at LBNL the Singer Group in the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) and JGI Divisions seeks to develop state-of-the-art plant growth chambers ‘EcoPods’ that allow direct and intensive monitoring and manipulation of replicated plant-soil-microbe-atmosphere interactions.
What You Will Do:
Develop a state-of-the-art growth chamber ‘EcoPods’ to study plant-microbiome-ecosystem dynamics under conditions relevant to the real world:
Work with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technicians, plant biologists, microbiologists and soil scientists to develop an EcoPod prototype.
Benchmark the growth chamber for a number of metrics related to plant performance, microbial community dynamics, and environmental characteristics.
Conduct drought experiments with Panicum grasses.
Analyze genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic and environmental (meta-)data to further develop EcoPod design and test equipment parts.
Coordinate and conduct field experiment testing drought stress on biofuel crops.
Prepare DNA and RNA samples for sequencing analyses.
Summarize experimental results and present them at group meetings.
Keep precise and detailed laboratory notebooks.
Manage relationships with our collaborators.
What is Required:
PhD degree in the relevant fields in Microbiology, Plant Biology, or Molecular Biology.
Strong motivation to contribute to develop the areas of research under the DOE mission.
Detailed knowledge in plant-microbe or other host-microbe interactions and microbial ecology.
Detailed knowledge in computational analysis of 'omics' datasets (16S rRNA amplicons, metagenomes, metatranscriptomics).
Preferred experience in plant maintenance in greenhouses or other types of growth chambers.
Preferred experience in metabolomics and soil nutrient analysis.
Motivation to work independently.
Ability to successfully work in a dynamic team environment.
Strong written and oral communication skills.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
