TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE I , Mechanical Engineering , to perform diverse mechanical and electrical engineering duties. Will prototype two tools--a machine-vision automated crack-detection tool for silicon-based wafers and solar cells using an optical imaging approach, and an interconnection technology suitable for solar cells. Will assemble and test single parts to comply with engineering specifications, integrating the parts into prototypes, performing tests with the prototypes, and amending the prototypes; perform prototype fabrication and assembly of optical, electronic, and mechanical components; independently test, prior to prototyping, optical and electronic components that have been evaluated in preliminary studies; iterate and improve prototypes, with a fast learning cycle, to achieve reliable and consistent results; develop calibration procedures and standard measurements that meet industry requirements; evaluate options for an inline and/or stand-alone tool; prototype designs that will be demonstrated to potential customers; modify/adjust the prototype quickly and according to industry feedback; lead transition of prototype design to scalable manufacturing; participate in design reviews and produce assembly diagrams and manuals; coordinate the project with other researchers on the team; and provide content for quarterly reporting and participate in quarterly update calls.
REQUIRED : bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related area; at least two years' experience in research and development; ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment; ability to coordinate with manufacturing personnel to build, test, and integrate the prototype; excellent CAD and machining capabilities; prototyping experience; and strong general engineering skills to combine mechanical, electrical, and optical subsystems.
