Berkeley Lab's Joint Genome Institute Division has an opening for a Systems Engineering Manager. The DOE Joint Genome Institute is a national scientific user facility that supports the mission of the Office of Biological Environmental Research. Understanding how organisms function so these functions can be predicted, modified and harnessed to address critical challenges has been a central driver of modern biology. Advances in genomics, synthetic biology, high throughput phenotyping, structural biology and computational biology have allowed significant progress toward this goal for specific organisms of interest and are likely to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The DOE JGI will continue to play a leadership role in the creation and analysis of multi-omics data that enables discovery in the areas of environmental genomics, biofuels, and other DOE BER mission areas. Informatics, data science and computing are at the core of these strategic efforts.
Reporting to the JGI Chief Informatics Office and Data Science and Informatics Leader, the Systems Engineering Lead will manage the teams responsible for building JGI's centralized infrastructure components including identity and access management, data management, user interface and user experience design, as well as workflow management. These teams will be managed according to Agile principles with a focus on staff ownership, accountability, as well as, rapid prototyping and deployment. The Systems Engineering manager, with the support of the CIO, will work across the JGI to lead the collection of requirements for the centralized systems. The Systems Engineering lead will support the CIO in the development and execution of the strategy for data science and informatics.
Represent the systems engineering group in relevant JGI reviews, national and international activities as well as within the DOE National Laboratory system. As a member of the JGI Management Team, actively participate in strategic planning for the organization and provide leadership for JGI initiatives.
What You Will Do:
Provide effective line management and support to a group of approximately 15 computer science engineers by hiring excellent staff and conducting performance management. Assure staff meet goals, provide both positive and constructive feedback to staff and keep them motivated.
Assure JGI's infrastructure services are high performing, scalable and leverage HPC resources in order to meet the needs of JGI's User community.
Work closely with other teams at JGI to enable applications to run seamlessly across JGI's supercomputing, storage systems, web gateways and database resources.
Contribute to JGI's data science and informatics strategy, as well as JGI strategic planning.
Continuously evaluate new technologies and make recommendations on future technical directions for the center.
Assure all staff members have career growth goals.
Create and develop a vision and strategy for the systems engineering group.
Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation; and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.
With the CIO and Systems Engineering Leadership Team, develop project plans and lead efforts to ensure software engineering projects are delivered in a timely fashion.
Help with management and reporting on activities and progress for JGI-wide software engineering projects.
What is Required:
Demonstrated excellence in the management of progressively larger and more complex technical groups, including a minimum of 3+ years of experience in a supervisory role of complex computer systems or networking unit.
Proven background in bioinformatics and high-performance computing and a broad computational science background, including: knowledge of Unix/Linux, data management systems, RESTful API development, as well as, software engineering best practices. Must have experience developing or overseeing scientific software. Must have experience with NGS data.
Experience with user-centered design or the gathering of user requirements.
Experience with software project management.
Familiarity with common software project management tools, devops practices, as well as, bioinformatics, and computational biology.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team-oriented organization and attract, retain and develop a talented and diverse staff. Ability to foster positive work relationship and resolve technical and personal conflicts with diplomacy and tact.
Experience running or developing large scale scalable systems in a production environment.
Deep and broad knowledge of computing and data infrastructure technologies such as scalable databases, authentication tools, web services and networking.
Ability to gather requirements from the user community and turn requirements into system and infrastructure characteristics.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
A master's or PhD degree in related fields.
Knowledge of existing/emerging technologies such as the Elastic Search/Logstash/Kibana (ELK) stack, authentication systems, databases, orchestration infrastructure
Familiarity with DevOps best practices and a willingness to learn Agile software project management practices.
