The College of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is seeking candidates for a full time, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for Fall 2018.
This position is expected to contribute to teaching across the entire physics curriculum at UVI which includes courses both for physics majors and non-majors. The successful candidates will be expected also to conduct research in a relevant areas of physics and to include undergraduate students in their research activities. UVI is home to physics research facilities including the Etelman Observatory and its robotically controlled 0.5m telescope, a new research-grade solar telescope and a satellite detector and cubesat development lab including a high-vacuum chamber. The selected candidate may take advantage of these facilities to benefit their research but may also carry-out research in any other field of physics research and are not required to be a specialist in the field of astrophysics to be considered for the position.
The University’s astrophysics expertise presently lies in robotic telescope operations and studies of high-energy transient phenomena (GRBs, AGN flares, CVs, etc). Candidates with experience and research interests in all branches of physics are encouraged to apply.
Appointees must be able to work productively with colleagues and students of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; serve on the University’s committees; and contribute to the implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan.
Successful applicants will hold a PhD in Physics or a related discipline at the time of appointment. Must possess a record of or potential for achievement in teaching, academic research and service.
