Berkeley Lab's Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate in Grid Integration. In this role, you will conduct Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing with OpalRT real-time power system simulators and photovoltaic and battery inverters. Additionally, you will develop new tools to perform analyses of simulation results, document results, and provide technical support to the group.
What You Will Do:
Develop and run simulations and control experiments for Distributed Energy Resources in electricity distribution systems.
Interface physical photovoltaic inverter hardware with models in the OpalRT real-time simulation environment.
Develop use case documentation to support testing and interfacing with industrial partners.
Perform Hardware-in-the-loop experiments to test control and optimization algorithms developed by collaborators.
Develop code to interface with commercially available PV inverter APIs to test new control approaches developed by the team.
Foster relationships with inverter hardware manufacturers and other potential industrial partners to develop future collaborations on DER control.
Provide technical support to the group.
What is Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field and at least 2 years of professional relevant experience or a minimum of 6 years professional relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced understanding of Power Systems Physics, Distributed Energy Resources modeling, and Control Theory.
Understanding of inverter/converter modeling and control.
Knowledge of optimization techniques.
Experience integrating hardware and software.
Experience working with Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation and testing environments.
Coding ability in GAMS, Python, Matlab, or other similar languages.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
Experience in research.
