Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is opening for a Survey & Alignment Technical Associate. You will report to the Technical Lead for the Advanced Light Source (ALS) and supporting the Accelerator Survey & Alignment Group. You will provide significantly skilled hands-on complex technical, analytical and computational accelerator survey and alignment support. You will be responsible for analyzing, developing and utilizing a variety of high precision survey and alignment techniques and technologies in supporting accelerator and related facilities at LBNL and other DOE and collaborating laboratories. You will utilize technical, mathematical and computer related knowledge and skills to complete moderately complex survey tasks and to analyze and solve moderately complex technical problems. The ability to understand the Advanced Light Source (ALS) procedures and specifications.
This is a matrix position that requires changing assignments/projects as work is completed or as scope changes.
What You Will Do:
Provides significantly skilled survey and alignment technical services for particle accelerators, beamlines and related systems to accelerator users, scientists, engineers and their staff.
Provides conceptual design, system analysis, precision measurement and alignment services as it applies to survey and alignment for particle accelerators, x-ray beamlines/beamline end stations/components and related apparatus including complex x-ray optical components at the ALS and other facilities.
Demonstrate the initiative to proactively take responsibility for major parts of accelerator survey and alignment tasks at the ALS and other facilities.
Works with experimenters and their scientific and engineering support personnel, develops survey and alignment techniques and technologies and strategically plans for implementation.
Provides thorough and well-organized documentation of work. Proactively works to develop improved documentation methods.
Interacts directly with users, engineers and scientific staff to translate survey and alignment concepts and requirements into work assignments.
Works independently and as a team member with accelerator physicists, beamline scientists and users to ensure functionality and long-term maintainability of systems.
Understanding of policy and procedures at the ALS.
Attends ALS and Engineering safety meetings as required.
Adherence to all applicable safety processes and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Knowledge of survey and alignment instrumentation and software utilized in both the accelerator and R&D environments.
What is Required:
Undergraduate degree in engineering, physics or applied mathematics or equivalent combination of experience and coursework.
Specialized skills and knowledge in the areas of survey and alignment techniques, analysis and computations.
Skilled in survey and alignment tasks, able to quickly learn new and varied instrument technologies.
Strong mathematical background in areas of geometry, trigonometry, basic calculus and basic statistics.
Strong computer skills including console computer to robotic instrument communications, CAD modeling and file transfer and high-level programming.
Understanding of mechanical systems and precision alignment mechanisms.
Understanding of control systems and control system programming.
Understanding of specialized software environments for acquiring and analyzing precision survey data.
Ability to set up and operate complex survey and alignment instrumentation.
The ability to analyze and interpret and present collected data to accelerator and beamline users and engineering and scientific staff.
Demonstrated ability in survey and alignment hardware and software operations.
Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze and provide solutions to a wide range of accelerator survey and alignment related problems.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of staff.
Demonstrated ability to provide well organized and effective documentation of work.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Ability to track, purchase and inventory survey and alignment components and hardware required for instrumentation support.
Experience utilizing and programming database management systems.
