Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis Environmental Impacts Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate (SEA) in The Energy Efficiency Standards (EES) group. The EES group supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Appliance Standards Program by performing the analyses that underlie the development and amendment of energy conservation standards and test procedures. The SEA will take a leading role in the application of scientific and engineering concepts to the design, implementation, and utilization of analytical tools for data collection, analysis, and modeling.
Scientific Engineering Associate (Level 1) Specific Responsibilities
Working under general supervision, apply quantitative analysis methods to evaluate the energy, economic and environmental impacts of appliance standards policies.
Support the development of quantitative models related to the analysis of energy efficiency for residential appliances, commercial/industrial equipment, and/or lighting products. This work includes modeling the pattern and distribution of energy use, consumer life-cycle cost, forecasting of product shipments, and estimation of aggregate national impacts of standards.
Contribute to development of tools to manage large databases, create and implement quality control procedures, and provide custom data sets to other EES researchers.
Provide technical support to the research team on troubleshooting the tools and models.
Work with limited supervision on the implementation and use of EES modeling tools, and perform quantitative and qualitative synthesis of findings.
Contribute to the creation of written documentation of modeling methods and results; contribute to the development of data visualizations and presentation materials..
In addition to the above, Senior Scientific Engineering Associate (Level 2) Specific Responsibilities:
Working with limited direction, create new analysis methods and tools to extend the application and precision of EES modeling capabilities.
Take a leading role in the development of database tools, quality control procedures, and construction of data sets.
Contribute to the application of energy efficiency analysis concepts and modeling tools to more general research projects.
As needed, present modeling methods and results to technical and non-technical audiences.
Bachelor's degree in physics, statistics, engineering, or related quantitative field, or knowledge equivalent to Bachelor's degree.
Two years professional technical experience or additional education in a field closely aligned with the position duties.
Proven expertise in comprehension and implementation of numerical analysis methods..
Experience with development of computational tools in Python and/or Excel/VBA.
Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
Ability to function well under supervision in meeting tight deadlines, and adapt to rapidly changing work demands.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively on teams sharing creative/innovative thinking.
Strong attention to detail.
In addition to the above, Senior Scientific Engineering Associate (Level 2) Required Qualifications:
Four years professional technical experience or additional education in a field closely aligned with the position duties.
Excellent oral and written English communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to present engineering and economic models and tools to a non-specialist audience.
Ability to independently manage participation in multiple projects.
Proven ability to collaborate productively with a technical team in the development of new analytic and/or computational tools.
Additional Desired Qualifications for the Scientific Engineering Associate & Senior Scientific Engineering Associate (Level 1 & 2):
Advanced degree (e.g., M.S. or Ph.D.) in physics, statistics, engineering, or related quantitative field.
Interest in energy research and policy.
1-2 years' professional experience applying concepts related to energy efficiency in appliances or buildings in an analytical context.
Familiarity with basic principles of relational databases and SQL.
Familiarity with economic concepts and tools such as cost-benefit analysis, life-cycle cost, net present value, consumer choice modeling.
Familiarity with the US federal regulatory process, especially as it relates to energy efficiency.
