Berkeley Lab's Environmental Genomics & Systems BiologyDivision has an opening for a Multi-Dimensional Solid-State NMR Postdoctoral Scholar. This position will be part of the Plant Systems Biology group led by Jenny Mortimer and part of the Feedstocks Division at JBEI. Specifically, the candidate will be involved in two projects which rely on multi-dimensional solid-state NMR as the core technique.
What You Will Do:
Optimize and maintain our in-house 13C labelling chamber for growth of sorghum and other plants.
Generate wild type and engineered plant biomass which is > 95% 13C labelled.
Perform multi-dimensional solid-state NMR (ssNMR) experiments, interpret data and design follow up experiments.
Develop a model for sorghum cell wall nanoarchitecture.
Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents.
Participate in group meetings and seminars.
Maintain an accurate and detailed electronic scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Store all data generated in an organized and secure way. Ensure that others could duplicate results.
Use solid state NMR to investigate the effects of cell wall engineering on cell wall nanoarchitecture.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Responsible for periodic reports to the director of the project, training research assistants and assisting others in the lab who require guidance with ssNMR, cell wall polymer interactions and use of the labelling chamber.
Provide detailed six-monthly reports that can be used as part of a manuscript for peer reviewed journals.
What is Required:
Recent PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Physics or related areas within last 3 years.
Substantial knowledge on the use of solid state NMR for glycans or other polymers.
Ability to conduct experiments independently.
Work with collaborators at remote physical sites, including in-person visits and regular virtual updates.
Ability to conduct original work that meets the milestones of a larger project and scientific program.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Previous experience with plant molecular biology, plant biochemistry or related subjects.
Previous experience of building and designing equipment for experiments.

This is a full time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
