The Computing Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab is looking for an experienced, creative and strategic leader for its communications team. Working in a fast-paced, competitive research community, Computing Sciences researchers and engineers help drive scientific discovery by providing scientists with one of the world's leading supercomputing centers, the world's fastest scientific network and advanced technologies developed by internationally recognized leaders in applied mathematics, computer science, data science and scientific computing.
We seek a communications professional with experience in communicating scientific and technical accomplishments to a broad audience, who has experience managing a communications team, and who has demonstrated a strategic and creative approach to communications using traditional and digital media. Our communications vehicles range from printed reports to social media.
What you will do:
Create and deliver timely news and information to varied audiences, including CS staff, Berkeley Lab employees, the U.S. Department of Energy, the broader scientific community and general public. This includes original content about research results, accomplishments, annual reports, presentations, collateral, messages from leadership, human-interest stories, and collaborating with the Department of Energy and other national laboratories on special projects. The group works closely with staff throughout the organization to main four main websites, including one for each of the national user facilities: the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet).
Manage a team of three staff who develop content and coordinate web development, all working together to effectively tell our stories to target audiences. The group supports three divisions and the area management, comprising a total of 300+ employees, working directly with staff at all levels.
Set group priorities and manage workloads, as well as day-to-day editorial work of the team, ensuring that projects are completed on schedule, meet editorial guidelines and are aligned with CS's strategic goals. The group leader also develops and writes articles, edits reports, responds to requests for information and media inquiries, helps maintain and update websites, and collaborates with the Berkeley Lab communications community.
Participate in strategic planning with senior management to develop communications plans to promote major initiatives to both internal and external audiences.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, corporate communications or related field, or seven or more years of experience in news/magazine/publications/online communications.
Ability to effectively organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, nimbly moving between them to produce high-quality work on time within a decentralized and complex environment.
Demonstrated leadership in a team-oriented environment; ability to delegate to others effectively, to develop timely, engaging content, and to be enthusiastic motivator.
Excellent science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research and concept development skills for clearly communicating complex scientific accomplishments to a range of audiences.
Superior interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of colleagues.
Strong professional judgment, with proven ability to be a creative and critical thinker and problem-solver.
Calm and focused under pressure; does not get rattled or distracted easily.
Demonstrated experience managing print and digital publications from inception through production, including setting and meeting editorial and production schedules and strategic priorities. Proven ability to take initiative and work independently.
Additional desired qualifications:
General understanding of high performance computing, networking, science and/or engineering is highly desirable.
Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.
Experience cultivating online communities, and using social media, blogs and multimedia tools desirable.
