The Energy Geosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity for a Career-Track Research Scientist with expertise in modeling of flow and reactive transport at floodplain and watershed scales. The position will involve a focus on modeling the fate and transport of nutrients in the terrestrial environment, including integrated surface and subsurface water and organic-rich hot spots. The modeling will consider climate-induced ecosystem responses across spatiotemporal scales, leading eventually to a scale-adaptive modeling capability for the important terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. The candidate should have experience in developing new software approaches for enhancing scientific productivity through interoperability among multiple codes involving flow and multicomponent reactive transport processes. The position will also require the development of new approaches for investigating the linkages between hydrological and biogeochemical processes at multiple scales using data assimilation and advanced machine learning techniques.
What You Will Do:
Develop and apply reactive transport models to quantify carbon and biogeochemical fluxes at floodplain and watershed scales with incorporation of microbial community population and function
Integrate isotope systems in numerical models of reactive flow and transport to identify the underlying processes
Collaborate with experimental geochemists to improve predictive capabilities for biogeochemical processes
Perform benchmarking of reactive transport codes to build confidence in interoperability and for the development of numerical simulators
Develop upscaling algorithms/approaches
Perform data-model integration and analysis with the use of high-performance computing;
Identify and develop new research areas and proposals
Engage as a member of a large, multidisciplinary research team that includes geochemists, hydrologists, and computational scientists
Author peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports
What is Required:
Ph.D., or equivalent work experience, in civil or environmental engineering, geochemistry, or hydrology, or equivalent discipline
Substantial knowledge and experience in modeling microbially-mediated biogeochemical reaction networks coupled to flow and transport
Substantial knowledge and experience in high-performance computing including parallel simulation and large dataset analysis and manipulation
Ability to identify and develop new research areas and proposals
Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists
Excellent written and oral communications skills and a proven track record of publishing in high-impact journals are also required
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Postdoctoral experience (>3 years) is preferred
International research exposure is preferred

This is a full time, three year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
This is a full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
