Berkeley Lab's DOE Joint Genome Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Biologist Project Scientist with a strong background in synthetic biology, molecular biology, cloning, and data analysis. Under general supervision, you will have a key role within the Agile BioFoundry (ABF) to coordinate the construction of pathways for the biological production of valuable compounds.
The candidate should be very experienced with state-of-the-art synthetic biology design tools (such as j5, BOOST, DIVA, ICE, RBScalculator) and be able to coordinate and communicate with customers to accurately define and document design specifications. You will have experience in troubleshooting difficult to complete constructs, as well as synthetic constructs that do not perform as expected from a functional standpoint. You must be able to interact with stakeholders and to propose alternative designs.
Communicate with customers to define design specifications and construction strategies
Enter design specification in appropriate software tools to generate construction workflows
Conduct or oversee the current processes of generating synthetic DNA molecules and provide feedback for areas of improvement
Manage project workloads with other Build staff to ensure that appropriate timelines are communicated and met
Interact with the Instrumentation support group to develop new methods to support process scale-up
Attend and present findings in external meetings and conferences as well as meeting with funders and senior management
Responsible for analyzing sequencing data and for coordinating cell culture, and the preparation of samples for proteomics, metabolomics, and other cellular assays.
Interact with other groups for the seamless transfer of samples for the analysis of strains through various platforms including proteomics, metabolomics and any other relevant phenotyping assay
Responsible for executing or overseeing the construction process and documenting all the QC steps in the appropriate LIMS.
Support ABF managers as necessary for report preparation, meeting organization or other ABF tasks
Propose new research projects to attract new funding and/or participate in multi-PI grant preparation
PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field
Demonstrated experience with the use of multiple Synthetic Biology design tools
Experience in handling, transforming and culturing microorganisms is essential for this job. In particular, knowledge and experience in assembling large DNA molecules using different assembly methods would be an advantage
Extensive experience of advanced DNA cloning technologies and genomic research
Three to five years experience post-graduation in experimental design and methodologies for DNA cloning, sequencing, and sequence analysis
Demonstrated understanding of how scientific principles apply to problem being studied
Demonstrated ability to interact well with members of a multi-disciplinary research team and have strong written and oral communication skills
Experience in complex protocol development and optimization procedures
Experience with other functional genomics technologies including CRISPR/Cas9, miRNAs, and TF binding assays
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience with automated liquid handling systems
Experience in working with large DNA molecules

This is a full time 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
