Berkeley Lab's Chemical Sciences Division has an opening for a Environmental Health & Safety Associate. The position applies standard principles, theories, technical scientific/engineering concepts, and Lab policies and procedures to coordinate multiple Division stakeholders in order to solve a variety of Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) problems. Significant technical expertise and knowledge of relevant functional specialty principles and practices are required. The incumbent will provide resolutions for technical and safety problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of relevant factors. Within defined scope outlined by Safety Manager, this person will exercise independent judgment to determine appropriate action.
What You Will Do:
Collaborate with Chemical Sciences personnel to resolve unique and complex processing requirements for WPC, safety equipment, chemical management and electrical safety, ensuring follow-up requests in a timely manner.
Partner with the Engineering Division on the oversight of electrical surveys and inspections for Chemical Sciences Divisions.
Manage Ergonomic program for Chemical Sciences Division.
Complete work assignments with accuracy and meet technical and safety performance criteria with consideration for cost-effective solutions and time constraints.
Maintain appropriate level of documentation in all key areas. This includes providing metrics and reports to management and recommendations for enhancements to existing programs and procedures.
Using specialized chemical handling and safety equipment principles, develop protocols to support complex projects.
Provide consultation and oversight to contractors ensuring proper SJHA.
Provide safety on-boarding to all new Chemical Sciences personnel as required to meet the Divisional, Lab and safety requirements and procedures.
Attend Divisional meetings to report and provide updates on safety issues across projects and programs.
Participate in cross functional and/or multidisciplinary teams to accomplish operational goals and objectives.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Serve as back-up to Safety Manager's duties in Chemical Sciences as needed.
Serve as back-up to building manager of 70A as needed.
Serve as the Chemical Sciences sustainability point of contact.
Contribute as needed on accident and injury investigations.
Serve on Building Emergency Team.
What is Required:
BS or BA degree in technical field such as Science or Engineering or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience.
Experience in developing and providing technical advice, instructions, and other services for the purpose of supporting technical program needs.
Demonstrated knowledge in managing health and safety aspects of projects, administering database programs, developing, revising and delivering training, and familiarity with applicable laws, regulations, codes and policies.
Demonstrated ability to respond in a timely manner to tasks and requests by customers/partners (e.g., scientists, technicians, administrative staff, managers), Building Managers, and Safety Manager.
Demonstrate initiative and commitment to proposing and meeting team goals and objectives.
Ability to demonstrate cooperation, communication, and professionalism with customers/partners (e.g., scientists, technicians, administrative staff, managers) Building Managers, and Safety Manager.
Demonstrated organizational skills to exercise judgment and initiative to determine appropriate actions using defined procedures and practices, with limited supervisor input.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Ability to support multiple activities in a fast paced dynamic environment.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Professional certification such as CSP, ASP, CIH, CAIH, CHMM, CHMP or OHST.
Ability to identify and implement items for continuous improvement in programmatic areas.
Ability to provide accurate written reports to applicable standards.
Ability to maintain complete records and files as applicable by programmatic area.
