Berkeley Lab's Nuclear Sciences Division (NSD) has an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Engineering Associate to engage in innovative, applied research as part of a team of physicists and engineers in the Applied Nuclear Physics Program (ANP). In this role, you will engage in innovative, applied research as part of a team of physicists and engineers working on the development of data acquisition systems and real-time analysis frameworks for systems that fuse radiation data with data from contextual sensors including video and LIDAR. This position will work under the direction of a principal investigator in the ANP and be filled at the level I or II, dependent on experience.
The ANP research portfolio consists of projects involving fielding modern radiation detectors in uncontrolled environments (e.g., cities) combined with other forms of contextual data to locate a 'threat' or to map radiological contamination. ANP is developing a suite of mobile radiation detection systems to field on small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), large helicopter and truck-based systems, as well as smaller man-portable packages with domestic and international collaborators.
Participate in planning and execution of original research on the development of multi-sensor and gamma ray detection and imaging systems.
Participate in the development of data acquisition systems and real time data processing algorithms for multi-sensor and gamma-ray detection and imaging systems.
Conduct data analysis, including developing new algorithms and/or tools.
Contribute to publishing papers, reports, and proposals and make oral presentations of original work.
Perform project tasks, meet deliverables and deadlines.
In addition to the above, Level II Specific Responsibilities:
Serve as technical lead for project, including reporting, managing collaborators, troubleshooting issues, and providing technical expertise.
Independently conceptualize, plan, and conduct original research on the development of multi-sensor and gamma ray detection and imaging systems.
Publish papers, reports, and proposals and make oral presentations of original work.
Provide project technical guidance and staff leadership, where directed, including setting project goals.
Manage project tasks, deliverables, and deadlines.
Contribute to other group activities related to advanced radiation detection concepts.
Interest in multi-sensor package development to integrate sensors with board computers.
A Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or related fields and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Familiarity with ROS and Linux.
Ability to both work independently with minimal supervision and work effectively with a team.
Demonstrated outstanding data analysis skills and proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
Experience with radiation detection and nuclear science concepts
Experience of algorithm development, signal processing, or statistical analysis.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Experience with processing and analyzing data from sensors including video and LIDAR.
Familiarity with machine vision techniques and image processing is desirable.
In addition to the above, Level II Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or related fields and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience working independently to undertake research and perform tasks with little or no guidance.
Additional Desired Qualifications for Both Levels:
Advanced Degree in Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science.
