Assistant Director of Physical Plant

Summary Of Position: This position supports the Director of Physical Plant by serving as director in their absence. In addition, they direct the Facilities Engineer and the energy management and utilities master planning programs; provide management direction to the Maintenance Controls Manager and CMMS operations; provide management direction to the Automotive and Transportation Manager and direct the Facilities renewal and renovation program, review of construction plans and building commissioning. Incumbent will be a key member of the Physical Plant leadership team. Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required, a master’s degree is preferred. Professional engineer license is required. Veterans are encouraged to apply. Special Skills Or Experience: Computer experience with PCs and both knowledge and experience with Microsoft Full Time/Part Time: Full-Time Regular Length Of Experience: A minimum of ten years experience in managing and directing a facilities operation, construction or maintenance organization of comparable size is required. Essential Duties and Responsiblites: Serve as Director of Physical Plant in the absence of the Director/AVP facilities to ensure continuity in operations, effective utilization of resources and management or personnel. Provide direction and support the Physical Plant directors in the effective execution of their duties. Approve purchase and personnel changes as necessary. Provides administrative direction to the automotive and transportation department to effective adequate resource allocation and management in the operation, repair and renewal of the university fleet and transportation systems Provides engineering oversight and direction to the Facilities Engineer and their on-going energy management efforts using the Web Control (DDC) system and energy conservation/reduction efforts. Direct the utilities masterplan and corresponding renewal and replacement efforts while assuring accurate utilities use tracking and analysis. Provide oversight to the maintenance controls manager and the operation of the CMMS software to assure efficient execution of work order and accumulation and analysis of building maintenance and customer service data. Manage the University's facility renewal and replacement plan. Schedule, delegate and/or conduct facilities inventory and condition assessments. Update spreadsheets of project renewal and replacement projects and costs. Prepare capital renewal budget requests and project authorization forms. Coordinate with Physical Plant Directors to assure their facility resources are included. In concert with the Facilities Engineer, review proposed building plans and construction documents to assure new projects meet university standards and expectations, and provide consistent, uniform, energy efficient and coordinated building systems. Also ensure adequate building commissioning and system training for Physical Plant staff occurs. Responsible for ensuring safety policies and practices are adhered to by subordinates at all times. Inspects shop spaces for safety deficiencies and takes immediate corrective action. Assures work conditions are safe and conducive to efficient operations. Plans for the professional development of subordinates through personal contact, budgeting and scheduling of training courses. Prepares performance evaluations of subordinates and conducts appraisal reviews highlighting strengths and areas needing improvement, if any. Delegates to and holds subordinates responsible for satisfactory performance of assignments. Development of subordinates must be a core belief of incumbent's management philosophy. Leads by example. Emphasizes cooperation, professionalism and instills excellent customer service attitudes in all work units. Models cooperation and coordination within Physical Plant and across all functions of the university A collaborative and inquisitive approach to leadership and management. A sense of humor is preferred.
