The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites outstanding faculty candidates to apply for multiple full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant or associate professor levels. Senior hires will be considered for exceptional candidates with the potential to lead major national center-level activities in the near future.
Candidates with a strong background in all areas of fluid mechanics (computational, experimental and theoretical) are particularly encouraged to apply. The Department seeks to build on its existing strengths in turbulent flows, multi-phase flows, and biomedical flows, but the individual's potential to conduct world-class research and to innovate in the fundamental understanding of flow is more important than the specific area of specialization. The ability to leverage the ME Department's and the University's competitive advantage on Geophysical Fluid Mechanics, Biomedical Research and Advanced Manufacturing to help launch multidisciplinary research efforts will also be an important consideration in the search committee's evaluation of applicants.
Candidates with a strong background and interests in the general area of engineering applied to the health sciences are also especially encouraged to apply. The Department has established a leading program in several facets of engineering innovation in health, including medical devices, optical and acoustic diagnostics, orthopedics and biomechanics, tissue cryopreservation, cellular biomechanics, cardiovascular flows, and cardiac dynamics/arrhythmia. We are foremost interested in candidates that can establish internationally-recognized research programs. Assets available to successful candidates include the collaborations with the world-class medical establishment present on campus and in the Seattle area. We again emphasize that the individual's potential to create a world-class research program is more important than matching any given technical specialization.
We are seeking exceptional candidates with the potential (for assistant professor candidates) or a track record (for associate professor or more senior candidates) to develop a high-impact research program with national and international recognition and impact. Candidates will also be expected to present how they will contribute to an innovative undergraduate curriculum, and develop graduate courses in their areas of expertise.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or other equivalent doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline by the date of appointment and excellent communication skills. The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching; to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program; and to contribute to the goals and missions of the department, college, and university. These positions are contingent on budgetary approval.
University of Washington faculty is committed to excellent teaching, outstanding research, and exemplary service. The Mechanical Engineering department's research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering, including interdisciplinary work in engineering in medicine, robotics and controls, materials, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy. The department currently has 39 full-time tenured, tenure-track and research faculty, 372 undergraduates, 160 masters students, 110 Ph.D. students and 17 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow.
